Resistent hypertension

Resistant hypertension is high blood pressure that does not respond well to medical treatment.

Resistant hypertension increases the risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney failure. It can cause damage to your memory and vision.

The Abdali Hospital Comprehensive Hypertension Center (ACHC) is run by a team of nephrologists, cardiologists and endocrinologists specialized in treating this condition.

What are the most common causes of resistant hypertension:

  • Sleep apnea, a tendency to stop breathing for seconds during sleep.
  • Renal (kidney) artery stenosis, a narrowing of the artery that sends blood to the kidneys.
  • Coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of part of the aorta
  • Kidney failure
  • Hormonal disorders

Diagnosis

  • Full history and physical exam
  • Measurement of your blood pressure using accurate equipment and including 24- hour monitoring at home. Accurate measurement is essential, and diagnosis is often missed due to incorrect techniques or devices.
  • Blood tests, Electrocardiogram, Echocardiogram and other test may be needed to assess related conditions or organ damage

Treatment

  • Addressing any conditions that may have caused the high blood pressure.
  • Making lifestyle changes
  • Adjusting medications to find your optimal drug and dosage.
