Medical Laboratory Technologist-I
Job Summary
Performs a variety of laboratory procedures in assigned sections including specimen receiving, processing and specimen collection. Prepares specimens, operates automated analyzers, performs routine laboratory procedures and shares rotation schedule, covers after hours, holiday duties if required by laboratory supervisors.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs and reviews quality controls on testing and decides if results are within acceptable ranges; researches problems and corrects.
- Maintains inventory for the laboratory and orders supplies and materials from vendors.
- Adheres to established lab and hospital policies in areas of: procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and HR policies.
- Assists Supervisor in writing policies and procedures for the laboratory tests.
- Checks specimens as to their condition, acceptability and appropriateness to the test and exceptions noted.
- Keeps equipment operating by following operating (manufacturer) instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance and calling for repairs when needed.
- Performs all routine laboratory procedures.
- Maintains a neat, sanitary, organized work area.
- Performs tests according to lab procedure, guidelines and test results are correctly and legibly entered on patient lab records.
- Keeps adequate supply of working materials on hand and maintains glassware if need be.
- Work pending is organized and appropriately left to follow up.
- Reports all critical and abnormal values according to protocol.
- Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling, sorting specimens, checking labeling logging specimens in the system.
- Participates in quality control/quality assurance for areas of specialty and lab indicators. Does not report patient results unless quality control data are within accepted parameters. Recognizes out of control values, takes corrective action and notifies others of changes.
- Responsible for accurately completing records and reports. Follows lab policy for data retrieval. Maintain logbooks for all instruments. Documentation of all Q.C and incidents.
- Interacts with all lab patients courteously and professionally as well as responding to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
- Complies with lab safety procedures.
- Maintains necessary continuing education for JCI and CAP certification.
Job Requirements:
- Master/Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related area of specialty.
Certification/registration or certification/registry eligible as a Medical Technologist, when available.
Professional Experience (essential minimum requirement):
4-6 years of working experience after the Bachelor's degree.
Specialized Knowledge (desirable):
Basic computer skills.
Good command of the English language.
Writing SOPs.
Competencies:
Preanalytical phase (specimen handling, instrument maintenance, calibration and quality control run).
Analytical phase (reagent, instrumentations& equipment, technique).
Postanalytical phase (result interpretation & documentation, computer system& LIS).
Compliance with safety and PPE precautions.
