Anesthesia Technician/Technologist
Job Summary
Anesthesia Technician:
Is an allied care worker who assists with the administration and monitoring of Anesthesia and has an extensive knowledge of anesthesia techniques, supplies, and technology (Anesthesia machine and monitoring and other devices which need to complete the Anesthesia successfully).
Anesthesia technicians are mainly employed by the anesthetics department, and work as a member of a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses and support workers.
Job Description
Anesthesia technicians are involved with all aspects of the delivery of a patient’s preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative anesthetics care taking into account the patient’s religion and cultural beliefs and respecting their right to medical privacy and dignity at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Check and secure central supply.
- Check and secure gas cylinders.
- Assemble and prepare Anesthesia equipment prior to surgery, prepare and sterilize monitoring equipment.
- Assemble, calibrate, and operate monitoring equipment before surgery.
- Ensure that required drugs, supplies, and equipment are available before surgery, and helping the anesthesiologist in preparation of the drugs as prescribed.
- Assist the anesthesiologist in his work including; blood transfusion, intravenous infusion, and intravascular procedures.
- Assist in Preparation and position the patient for surgical procedures.
- To work in a group in theatre, during and after surgery to facilitate every professional for best interest of the patient.
- Assist the physician with emergency resuscitation measures.
- Accompany the patient during transferring to the recovery room.
- Perform on-call and shift assignment in accordance with the hospital/local policy.
- Follow all hospital related policies and procedures.
- Perform any other related tasks as assigned.
- Verify availability of operating room supplies, medications, and gases.
- Participate in seminars, workshops, or other professional activities to keep abreast of developments in anesthesiology.
- Pretest and calibrate Anesthesia delivery systems and monitors.
- Respond to emergency situations by providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic cardiac life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), or pediatric advanced life support (PALS).
- Provide clinical instruction, supervision or training to new staff in Anesthesia practices.

Working conditions
Working hours are planned but they can be quite long and irregular including night work, weekend work and on call rotas. The on-call requirement is variable, but typically one night a week and one weekend in anything from one in four to one in twelve (or even less). Good working relationships with colleagues will enable shift swaps where possible.
