Cardiac Care for Athletes
Undetected heart conditions represent one of the most serious risks facing competitive athletes. Abdali Hospital's experienced Cardiovascular team offers comprehensive cardiac assessments and specialist advice, with a dedicated screening programme designed specifically for athletes. We have a specialised Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Centre, addressing the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. We work in close collaboration with our Pulmonary and Physical Rehabilitation departments.
- Screening
- HCM centre
- Exercise prescription
Why cardiac screening matters for athletes
- HCM accounts for up to 40% of sudden cardiac deaths in young competitive athletes
- Ventricular arrhythmias during intense exercise are the primary mechanism of cardiac arrest
- Many athletes are entirely asymptomatic — undiagnosed until a critical event
- ECG abnormalities are present in over 90% of HCM cases, making systematic screening highly effective
Conditions we treat
- Cardiomyopathies including Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
- Arrhythmias in athletes
- Congenital heart diseases and return to sport
- Valvular heart disease
- Exercise-related symptoms: chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, and syncope
- Sudden cardiac arrest risk assessment
- Coronary artery disease and safe return to sport
In partnership with our Physical Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy team, we provide personalised exercise prescription to support safe training plans for athletes living with cardiac conditions, and structured return-to-sport pathways following cardiac events.
